Which is Better for Your Driveway: Tarmac or Resin?

December 4, 2025/0 Comments/in Driveways/by Aron Johnston

Choosing the right surface for your new driveway is a major decision that impacts cost, kerb appeal, and long-term maintenance. Tarmac and resin-bound surfaces are two of the most popular choices in the UK, but they offer very different benefits.

Here is a breakdown to help you decide which material is best for your home and budget.

Tarmac: The Cost-Effective Workhorse

Tarmacadam, or simply tarmac, is the classic, durable material known for its strength and affordability. Tarmac is typically the cheapest option upfront, making it ideal for budget-conscious projects or very large areas. It is quick to lay, meaning minimal disruption to your home, and it handles heavy traffic well, offering a lifespan of around 15–20 years with proper care. However, tarmac offers limited aesthetic options (usually black or red), can fade to grey over time, and is non-permeable, meaning you often need separate drainage installed. It may also require resealing every few years to prevent cracking.

Resin-Bound: The Premium, Low-Maintenance Finish

Resin-bound surfacing combines natural stone aggregates with a clear, strong resin, creating a smooth, modern, and high-end look. Resin offers unparalleled customisation, with a huge variety of stone colours and blends to perfectly match your property. It significantly boosts kerb appeal. It is also fully permeable (SuDS compliant), allowing water to drain naturally through the surface, preventing puddles and reducing flood risk without needing extensive drainage systems. While the initial cost is higher, resin requires minimal maintenance—just an occasional sweep or power wash—and can last 15–25 years or more, offering excellent long-term value. Installation does, however, require a dry, mild day.

The Verdict: Which Should You Choose?

Feature Tarmac is Best If… Resin-Bound is Best If…
Budget You need the lowest initial cost and a fast installation. You value long-term savings from minimal maintenance.
Aesthetics You prefer a simple, neat, and utilitarian look. You want a premium, customised finish and max kerb appeal.
Durability You have very heavy vehicles or want a proven, robust surface. You need a flexible surface that is highly resistant to cracking and fading.
Water You are installing separate drainage solutions. You want a SuDS-compliant, permeable surface that prevents puddles.

Tarmac is the practical, proven, and most affordable option. Resin-bound is the premium investment that delivers superior aesthetics, low lifetime maintenance, and better drainage.
